Keep in mind that there are parameters exclusive to attics to which contractors and designers should adhere. For instance, the general rule is that the usable space in the attic begins where all of the walls reach five feet in height: that’s something to think about as you’re planning out your renovated space. That doesn’t mean, however, that we can’t raise the roof—literally. We are very capable of converting your existing roof to a new style.

We will also work with you to determine whether you should consider building a staircase or a ladder to access the attic space. There are specific dimensions that are necessary on the main floor to run a straight set of stairs up to the attic, and there are restrictions on when a ladder may substitute for stairs. We will work with you to find a configuration—be it straight or turning, like a spiral staircase—that is ideal for your needs and your style. Additionally, we will address whether the roof joists above the attic may need to be upgraded to support the weight of additional insulation.
