Experience Versus Innovation

Published by Dale on 4/2/2008. Filed Under: Quoting the Experts

Joe and I attended a class last week with the NAHB. The class is one of many created to help builders and remodelers achieve a green building, aging in place, or a master graduate builders certification. Joe and I are seeking to obtain all 3.

There was a tremendous amount of helpful material presented, but there is one story that I really identified with.

The presenter told a story about a daughter, mother, grandmother, and a great grandmother.

The daughter asked the mother why she cut the ends off of a roast and turned them on side before she put the roast in the oven.

The mother replied, this is how my mother always cooked a roast.

The daughter then went to the grandmother and asked her why she cut the ends of the roast and turned them on side before putting them in the oven. The grandmother replied: this is how my mother cooked a roast.

The daughter then went to the great grandmother and asked her why she cut the ends off the roast and turned them on their side. The great grandmother replied: the reason is because our ovens were too small to fit the whole roast. I had to cut the ends off and turn them on their side so the roast would fit inside the oven.

The building and remodeling profession is difficult. Every home is different. Every customer has different tastes and style.

How often should we:
... Evaluate our performance to see if their is a better way to achieve the same goal?
... Learn about what technological advances our industry has made?
... Speak with a consultant who can give us a 3rd party non-biased evaluation of how we are meeting our customers expectation?

At GoodFellas Construction we:
... Reflect on every project we complete with our customer and our team.
... Seek expert advice from our vendors, architects, and other professional advisors.
... Constantly improve the way we plan, design, deliver, and warranty the lasting value that we provide to our customers.

Stay tuned to see how we will continue to help improve our industry...
