Is Remodeling Affected By The Housing Slump?

Published by Joseph Kupstas on 5/26/2008. Filed Under: The Housing Economy

I have been noticing a trend at my remodeling appointments in the last 2 months.  Many of our new clients are under the impression that because the housing market is poor, that the remodeling industry is in rough shape and now may not be the best time to remodel or put money into their house.  I could not disagree more.  Yes the new home construction industry is slumping but history shows that it comes down and than it goes up and when it does go up it always finishes higher than it starts.

There is no better investment than that of putting your hard earned money into your best and greatest investment, Your House.  It is very important that you invest a portion of income into protecting this investment.

I have noticed this trend also.  People will go out and purchase a new car (Or Used), they will make payments on this car, pay for maintenance like brakes, shocks, etc. etc. and at the end of the 5 years trade this car in and get 1/3 if that of what they paid for it.  On the other hand I will go into clients homes who purchase the house 25 years ago for $70,000 and have put about $10,000 in maintenance over the 25 years?  This doesn't make sense to me.  Now this house is worth $350,000 but needs $100,000 worth of work because it is rotted and everything needs fixing.  Shouldn't these houses be worked on continuously for the whole time you own the house?  I believe that homeowners need to invest a little money each year into maintenance and than every 2 to 3 years pick a larger project and complete it.

This type of planning will protect your biggest investment and save you a lot of money.  At GoodFellas many of our clients live up to this type of planning with us.  Many of them call us each year with the next phase of maintenance.  These houses are well maintained and their resale value is much greater than most houses.  Ask us how we can help you with your investment and planning your projects in phases.
